A Word from our Board of Management

As the eighth week of our school being reopened draws to a close, the Board of Management of Salesian Primary School wishes to thank everyone for their support to date. We are glad that the Salesian philosophy of loving kindness and respect is still strong in the school.

We are very proud of the work that the management team has undertaken again this summer. Zone 3 & 4 have had an overhaul with new classroom doors and paintwork updated for a fresh and revitalising look to the interior of the building. They are to be commended for everything that has been achieved. That our pupils continue to be at the core of every safety and learning decision implemented by the staff in the Salesian Primary School makes us particularly proud.

Our school's celebrations of the religious sacraments of communion and confirmation have been very different this year, and yet this has made them extra special. It is important in these times to mark milestones in our pupils' lives, so we are very glad that these have happened.

Traditions and celebrations are important to us all here in Salesian PS. We are delighted to have been able to support our school's new fundraising efforts during Mission Week. Charity has always been cherished here. More so, we look forward to supporting the teachers in their quest to add familiar traditions and celebrations where possible throughout this school year.

Please let us continue to work together as a community to keep our pupils in school and to protect our vulnerable community members.

Thank you all for your continued support of our school.

Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation

Congratulations to our Communion and Confirmation classes who finally had the opportunity to receive the sacraments, which were postponed earlier in the year due to Covid restrictions . Although these children had to wait a little longer than usual to celebrate their special day and celebrations may have been a little different, it didn't dampen their spirits. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and their families and we are all very proud of you. Well done to all involved and thank you to Fr. Ryan and Fr. McAuliffe for organising the ceremonies.

Google Classroom

Google Classroom continues as our online learning platform for homework across all of the classrooms. All class teachers are using Google Classroom as a way of communicating weekly homework assignments to their classes. We trust you are becoming more familiar with this platform as the weeks go on and that you are finding it useful. Please note, that in the unlikely event that we find ourselves in lockdown, Google Classroom will be used to engage and interact with pupils during this period, offering continuity of learning for our pupils. Therefore, if you have not yet succeeded in setting up your child's Google Classroom account please email your child's class teacher from Monday Nov 1st, in order to set up relevant access for your child.

ICT and Chromebooks

Our school are delighted with our new trolley of 30 chromebooks. Both pupils and teachers are using Gsuite now both in-class and at home.

'We love using the chrome books in class to do things like editing and re-drafting our English writing genre pieces, for project work, to do maths puzzles and challenges, we created hybrid animals in our STEM projects and we can do art work as well as researching online in-class!'' 6th class pupil

Teachers have also been furnished with touch screen chrome books which connect up to the interactive whiteboards to help create more innovative and exciting lessons.

Covid-19 Current Guidelines

When to keep your child at home and phone your GP

If your child is aged 3 months to 13 years, does not have symptoms of COVID-19 is unvaccinated and is a household close contact they need to:

But they do not have to do either of these if they are fully vaccinated or had a positive test in the last 9 months.

In line with these guidelines, we ask that you do not send your child to school if any of the following are true:

  • a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or more
  • any other common symptoms of COVID-19 - a new cough, loss or changed sense of taste or smell, or shortness of breath
  • been in close contact within a household setting only with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19
  • been living with someone who is unwell and may have COVID-19
  • an existing breathing condition that has recently got worse

This information has been taken from the HSE website. Please follow this link for further information: https://www2.hse.ie/coronavirus/

Winter Months

Throughout the coming winter months, windows and doors of classrooms will be left open throughout the day. This helps us to maintain a constant supply of fresh air in our classrooms which is important when trying to reduce the spread of the Covid 19 infection. Therefore, we feel that it is important for children to wrap up well and wear additional warmer clothing coming to school. We suggest the following:

  • children dress in layers rather than having only one heavy winter coat over their uniforms
  • all pupils may wear navy trousers
  • fleeces are welcomed particularly if they are red or navy [note other colours are allowed this year].

These options will be sensibly reviewed as the winter weather arrives.

Expectations of Parents and Visitors to the School

Parents are expected to make an appointment through the office if they wish to request a meeting with a teacher

  • Adults will be expected to model good sanitation habits.
  • Masks will be expected to be worn by all adults on school grounds
  • We kindly ask that this continues outside of school gates as parents/guardians wait for their children to leave the school.
  • Limerick City and County Council expect that everyone will follow social distancing rules when being helped across the road by Raphael, our school warden.
  • Face to face interactions will be minimised.

These guidelines are in place to ensure the health and safety of our pupils, parents and teachers. We thank you in advance for adhering to these guidelines and playing your part in helping to keep our school safe.

Mission week

This week being Mission Week, a very important week for all of us 'Salesians', has been a great success so far. This traditionally is a week we strive through fun, child- friendly activities to highlight to our pupils the cause of our Salesian Missionaries who are working, both globally and locally, to alleviate the plight of children who are poverty-stricken or struggling for all sorts of reasons.

Teachers have planned and organised in-class events such as a class Discos, Bingo and Cinema Experience to replace our usual whole school events. Children were also invited to participate in Halloween Costume / Colours Day this Friday.

This year our chosen charities are:

*Salesian Sisters in South Africa

Sr Mary Hickey and Sr Helen Hartnett originally from Limerick are both part of the Salesian Sisters who are working with the locals there.

Your support for this worthy cause is very much appreciated.

Parent's Association

Every parent / guardian of a pupil enrolled in Salesian Primary School is an automatic member of the Parents' Association.

Each year a committee representing the Parents / Guardians is elected by them.

Our present PA committee works with the Board of Management and the management of the school to develop the school for the benefit of our pupils.

The next PA meeting is being held on Wednesday the 2nd of November at 10:30 am. This will be another online meeting and a link will be sent on our return to school.

Parent- Teacher Meetings in November

With agreement from the BoM, this year's Parent Teacher Meetings will be held in the third week of November, 2021. Time Slots will be released no later than the week before. This year the meeting will be held online again.

Principal's Message

As the Irish traditional Samhain Festival approaches, Salesian PS will not be able to escape the arrival of ghosts, goblins, pirates, super heroes, princesses, witches and monsters through our gates. We look forward to our pupils being welcomed into school in costume or ordinary dress on Friday. Ordinary dress is also very fitting as the old Irish and Celtic belief is that the extraordinary walked amongst the everyday people during the time of Samhain [Hallowe'en]. All we ask is that pupils remember that NO INFLATABLE COSTUMES, MASKS OR PROPS are allowed in school. These should be saved for use at home on the 31st of October.

The Salesian PS community has, yet again, really come together in the last few months and the return of sport with the promise of more familiar activities returning next term is heartening. Next term will bring change - a lot of return to the familiar and some unexpected. However, the school community has proven itself to be resilient and we will meet everything head on.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir- Aisling Murray, my other amazing colleagues, our fabulous pupils and their wonderful families.

Maths Week October 2021

Well done to all the teachers and students of our school who participated so enthusiastically in Maths Week 2021 . The week began with each class focusing on some aspect of Maths and presenting it through art. 2D Shapes, Picasso faces , 3D Shapes, Construction of Buildings and Robots, Number, Tessellation, Symmetry were all areas explored.

For the rest of the week, we aimed to set aside the Maths Books and have fun with Maths. Card Games were played, board games were pulled out, puzzles were presented and strategies were discussed. Some of our classes used ipads, others Chrome books to further engage.Unknown to ourselves we were doing lots of Maths in a fun way.

The weather was good so we were very fortunate to be able to go out into the environment to explore all the places maths is evident. Essentially we put on our Maths Eyes and found lots of shapes and of course plenty of examples of 'number' in the yard and playground.

A successful week was enjoyed by all .We are already looking forward to next year!

Thank you to our hard working staff who facilitated such a fun week and to the children who made the week so enjoyable.
