Mission Week News

Mission week was held in our school from 21st to  5th October 2019.
This year we fundraised forJigsaw in Limerick. This is a mental health support service for children and adults aged 12 to 25. We also raised money for our Salesian Sisters in Lesotho and Johannesburg in South Africa.

The children enjoyed the week immensely. Junior infants to first class enjoyed class based bingo. 2nd to 6th class enjoyed bingo in the Halla on Thursday 24th. The children won many Halloween
themed prizes and enjoyed some Halloween jokes!!!

Our 5th and 6th classes held bake sales. They produced tasty treats for children and staff to buy. Cookies, brownies, popcorn hands and pumpkin cupcakes were popular choices!!!

On Friday 25th Junior infants to 4th class danced the day away at the Halloween disco. Many of our children dressed up in Halloween costumes!!! 6th class girls and our SET team helped make the disco a memorable event.

Thanks to all our children, their families and our staff for helping us raise €1,286.88 during MISSION WEEK. Your generosity and kindness is much appreciated.

Robotics' Fundraisers

On the 22nd of November, Ms Dooley Ryan and Ms O' Donnell's 5th class ran a fundraiser event for our Robotics Project. All Junior and Senior Infants built Santa's Grotto and helped Santa design his wrapping paper using Lego! They were amazing Lego builders and used lots of problem solving skills. The 5th class girls proved themselves as competent organisers and leaders. They enjoyed preparing all the details for the big day - posters, timetables, materials and a detailed agenda to ensure the smooth running of the day. They were so impressive in guiding the younger children's work in a kind and encouraging manner and working together as a team. Everyone met Gobot, their robot and were entertained by their Gobot song and dance. The younger children were very proud of their certificate for their fantastic participation. Well done 5th class.

Meanwhile, Ms. Dowling and Ms. Murphy's 5th&6th class organised a Vintage Funfair Fundraiser as part of their VEX Robotics competition fundraising endeavours. First to sixth classes had fun playing vintage games such as Hook the Duck, Tin Can Alley and Clutch a Teddy using their robot. Pupils won prizes galore from the mountain of teddies and other fun bits that were up for grabs.

The whole school enjoyed the great fun of the day and both classes are very grateful to the school and families who supported both their fundraisers.

Tennis

Our senior classes thoroughly enjoyed their tennis lessons on Friday mornings during our first
term. Limerick Lawn Tennis Club is a wonderful amenity to have on our doorstep and the coaches led by CJ helped the girls feel welcome, comfortable and confident, whether they had previously engaged with the sport or not.
The pupils became familiar with the areas of the tennis court: baseline, service line, sideline and tramline. They learned how to hold their racket correctly and how to adopt the ready position. They practised throwing the ball over the net for a partner to return with the racket (using their forehand) and how to serve a ball for a partner to return.
Through engagement with fun drills on the court, the girls learnt the fundamentals of tennis,
developed proper technique and built confidence in themselves as budding tennis players.
Submitted by Ms Griffin's second class.

Catherine Walsh Retirement

As this term draws to an end and the excitement and wonder of the magical Christmas season comes upon us, there is also an air of sadness among our school community as it is almost time for us to bid farewell to our deputy principal Mrs. Catherine Walsh. Catherine Walsh is retiring from our school on the 6th of January 2020 having provided 38 years of service to education in our school. She is a treasured colleague who has been instrumental in promoting
the Salesian ethos as part of both Scoil Croí Ró Naofa Íosa and most recently in our  malgamated Salesian Primary School.

Catherine is a well known figure in our school. Down through the years Catherine has supported, organised and established many initiatives within our school and has been wholly committed to our pupils' education across all levels. Many of you will have had contact with her over the years in projects such as Food Dudes, Green Schools, Health Promoting Schools, the Shared Maths programme, WOW days and COW days to name a few.
There will be a special celebration held in The Holy Rosary Church on January 10th 2020 at 11:00 am.We would like to invite you all to join us in this celebration where we will have the opportunity to remember and celebrate the contribution that Catherine has made to the life of Salesian Primary School.

Salesian Primary School would like to take this opportunity to wish Mrs. Walsh a long, happy and healthy retirement. We thank her for her positivity, support, guidance, commitment and enthusiasm to staff, children and parents alike. Mar a deir an seanfhocail 'ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann'.
